Explore Impurity Detection and Online Measurement for CCS

As carbon capture and storage (CCS) moves towards larger, interconnected networks, CO₂ from different industrial sources will need to be transported through shared infrastructure. These CO₂ streams can differ in their composition, operating conditions and impurity content, making reliable measurement and monitoring increasingly important.

How can we determine what is actually flowing through a CO₂ transport system? How can impurities be detected and measured during operation? And which measurement technologies are suitable for CCS applications?

This COREu Lunch & Learn webinar '‘Monitoring CO₂ Streams - Impurity Detection and Online Measurement for CCS'’ will address the these questions by exploring CO₂ stream analysis, impurity detection and online measurement technologies for CCS. Online measurement enables the composition and impurities of a CO₂ stream to be monitored directly during operation, complementing offline methods where samples are collected from the stream and analysed separately, for example in a laboratory. Drawing on work from EU funded project COREu, and Norwegian research project MACON CCS, the speakers will introduce different approaches to analysing and monitoring CO₂ streams and discuss their potential application in future CCS transport networks.

About COREu

COREu is one of the largest research and innovation project in the field of carbon capture and storage (CCS) funded by a European programme. Its goal is to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future, targeting a reduction of 6.8 Mt/year of CO2 by 2035 and 36 Mt/year by 2050. This will be achieved by demonstrating key technologies across the entire CCS value chain in Europe. The project aims to develop new demonstration projects that connect CO2 sources with potential storage sites. The project has received funding from the European Union's HE research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101136217.

About MACON CCS

MACON CCS is a research project focusing on the monitoring and control of CO₂ transport networks. Its goal is to address key challenges arising from future CCS networks that connect different CO₂ sources with varying flow rates, operating conditions and impurity levels. The project develops knowledge and tools for predictive flow modelling and assesses sensor technologies for the real-time monitoring of CCS streams. Coordinated by SINTEF Energy Research, MACON CCS brings together research and industry partners and is partly financed by the Research Council of Norway.
